One of the biggest things that you need to keep an eye out for besides routine cleaning and keeping the water healthy is leaks. Swimming pool leak detection means that you have to do a little more than outsource your pool maintenance. You also need to learn what to look for as a pool owner.

The Cost of a Pool Leak

A leaking pool can lead to a multitude of repairs. The longer a leak goes unnoticed, the more expensive the repairs will be. These include the original cause, increased utilities, damage to your lawn and pool deck, and maybe your neighbor’s lawn depending on how big the leak is, it can really add up.

Connect with Hydra Pool Service today and we’ll send our pool experts out to inspect your pool and equipment.

How much water loss does a pool leak create?

Pools evaporate naturally so you can expect to see some decrease in the water level daily. Anything over ¼ of an inch per day is cause for concern. ⅛ per day is considered average evaporation, especially in the warmer climate of AZ. Most pool leaks start out fairly small but they get larger as time goes on. There are a lot of reasons why a pool can start leaking but they do, most of the time, start out fairly small.

Such a small amount is hard to tell with the naked eye so you must learn how to determine if a leak has occurred.

How much does that water leak cost?

A swimming pool leak can lead to a decently long list of expenses and repairs. One tell-tale sign that a leak has occurred is that you see an unexpected increase in your electric or water bill.

Your pool isn’t always to blame. Sometimes the leak is elsewhere in the home but your pool should be one of the first places that’s checked. The spike will be well above the normal summertime pool season spike.

A small, pinhole leak can unfortunately waste as much as 950 gallons of water per day, so you’ll definitely notice the increase. It won’t be small.

Hydra Pool Service’s trained pool technicians will check for leaks and faulty equipment every time we come out but you should still check from time to time when we’re not there.

Signs of a leak:

Losing more water than regular evaporation

Air in the system – if you see air bubbles coming out of the return lines in your pool, you likely have a leak in the filtration system somewhere

Visible cracks

Pool deck sinking or lifting – underground leaks can lead to pooling water that damages your pool deck. Don’t write these things off as a normal sign of wear and tear

Soggy spots around the pool – these can be seen in yards. It’s easy to chalk this up to extra rainwater or something else but this is definitely a sign of a pool leak

You’re adding water frequently

Inconsistent pH – If you notice any of these signs, call Hydra Pool Service right away and we’ll schedule a time to check your system or come right away if the signs are major.
